Advantages of EPIC’s Sanitizer Continuous Mixing System

EPIC’s engineers have developed a continuous mixing skid that allows manufacturers to begin hand sanitizer production faster, with lower cost and greater compliance. It provides an opportunity for manufacturers to keep employees working and supports a key global effort to manage the on-going pandemic. Because this sanitizer skid is fully automated, it provides a greater level of formula quality assurance and less manual labor. Additional benefits of this system include:

    • Simple Setup – Run your product faster with more flexibility. You provide the raw material: alcohol, water, glycerin, carbomer solution (premix powder), pH adjustment chemical, pH adjustment (automatic capability allows you to customize on the fly) and the system will mix your product the same day of delivery.
    • FDA Compliance – Meets FDA compliance for validation and regulation. Hand sanitizer qualifies as a drug-related classification and is regulated. This system is designed for tight tolerance and to make it easy for record-keeping and sampling.
    • Eliminate Risk – Ingredients in alcohol skids and systems are flammable and must be handled with care. Unlike other systems, this skid is designed to reduce the risk for flammability or explosion.
    • Save Floorspace – The continuous mixing machine doesn’t require bulky tanks and equipment compared to batch mixing systems. This reduces the footprint of your system.
    • Lower Capital Costs – Fewer equipment requirements mean lower capital costs.
    • Avoid Downtime – Each skid is fully checked and tested offsite in EPIC’s isolated fabrication shop, saving you from production downtime.
    • Reduce Labor Requirements – Automated process skids require less manual labor and human interaction.
    • Simplify Cleanouts – These skids are easy to clean with simple maintenance between runs.
    • Remain Nimble – EPIC’s modular process skids are designed for easy transportation and relocation, allowing you to move your modular chemical dosing system across the plant, across the country, or across the world, as business needs change.
    • Expand Faster – Less capital investment allows you to build multiple replica skids and easily establish regional blend facilities worldwide.

Class 1, Division 2 Requirements

Hand sanitizer skids utilize a flammable alcohol ingredient and must be stored and mixed in Class 1, Division 2 locations. You must provide an adequate understanding of the following three situations to convert your area to a Class I, Division 2 location.

    • In the event that volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases are handled, processed, or used, you must make considerations for the ingredients. Hazardous liquids, vapors or gases must normally be restricted within closed containers or closed systems from where they can escape only during an accidental breach or failure of the containers or systems, or due to unexpected operation of the equipment.
    • Ventilation must be considered per industry and government regulations and guidelines. Ignitable concentrations of gases or vapors must utilize positive mechanical ventilation. Equipment must be checked and maintained to not become hazardous through failure or abnormal operations of the ventilation system.
    • Areas adjacent to a Class I, Division 1 location, where ignitable concentrations of gases or vapors might occasionally be circulated, must be checked and tested regularly unless prevented from exposure. To be excluded from exposure testing, areas must have sufficient positive-pressure ventilation from a clean air source, and effective safeguards must be provided by the company against ventilation breakdowns.

Custom Continuous Process Systems

Following the Coronavirus outbreak, EPIC has received several requests to help manufacturers quickly convert their operations to a hand sanitizer continuous mixing approach. With the hand sanitizer shortage in mind, EPIC is proud to apply our 20+ years of continuous mixing expertise to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

EPIC’s engineers and in-house craftsmen bring two decades of experience designing and building proven continuous blending skids, systems and machines that are FDA and OTC compliant, but that’s not all we do. We can also integrate or design the ancillary systems around the skid (other feed pumps, tanks or systems). EPIC has upgrades available for Class I, Division 2 (C1D2), minor ingredient storage tanks, and finished product storage.

Below are just a few examples of the many continuous blending skids EPIC has manufactured over the years. Note that these photos depict skids that were custom designed to each client’s specification, and may have additional features compared to the continuous mixing skid described above.
