Modular process systemCost can vary greatly from project to project. Cost depends on modular process system complexity and how far along system process design is. The less developed a concept, the more resources are spent in the design phase of the project.

When EPIC’s engineers develop a cost for a project, they spend funded time to; define critical unknowns, develop base P&ID’s and equipment lists, assemble a project timeline, and arrive at the most accurate possible price. This approach leads to reduced change orders and streamlines project execution. You can see the specific deliverables produced during our front-end engineering effort on our webpage.

How large is EPIC Systems?

We have approximately 70 employees at EPIC as of 2015. EPIC is a company made up of; process engineers, controls engineers, mechanical engineers, designers, skilled craftsman, and support staff. We execute jobs across the United States and throughout the world. Our 40,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility is located on the same site as our engineering offices.

What should I do before seeking a modular process design/build company?

Answer to: What should I do before seeking a modular process design/build company?

100% of the time, EPIC relies on the client to bring the base process technology. If the client does not know their process technology intimately, the project is NOT at a stage that is a good fit for EPIC. Here are a few questions that help qualify if the application is ready for a process skid designer:

  • Do you have a mass and energy balance?
  • Do you have the technology licensed?
  • Do you have a process flow diagram?

(If the answer is “no” to any of these questions, your project is not at the correct stage for a modular process system company.)

How long will it take to get a completed pilot plant?

Answer to: How long will it take to get a completed pilot plant?

This can vary based on the complexity of the job, but in general it’s somewhere around 8 – 12 months if there are no delays. A few factors that can effect both the length of the project and overall cost include:

  1. Do you have special circumstances (complicated installation paths, extra testing requirements, restrictive space, etc.) that the pilot plant must meet? Design, fabrication and testing will all be effected by these requirements, and your timeline can stretch out as a result.
  2. How harsh are your operating conditions? Extreme pressure (high or low) or temperature requirements (high or low) will require special operating conditions and more equipment, pushing the cost up and the timeline out.
  3. Will highly corrosive chemicals be involved or unusual materials of construction required? Highly destructive chemicals will mean special materials of construction must be used to avoid pipe, tank and system corrosion. Specialized equipment or materials of construction can take longer to source and are more expensive.
  4. How precisely do you want to measure data and/or control specific parameters?  The more micro you require the data to be (1.0 vs. 1.011 vs. 1.011111), the more time will need to be spent installing instrumentation and creating system controls.
  5. How big is the production capacity? This is pretty straight forward. The more end-product you want to produce, the larger the system has to be. The larger the system, the longer design, fabrication, testing, etc. will take.

What data can I get from a pilot plant?

You can get however much or little data as you require. Temperature, pressure, and flow are examples of common measurements taken inside pilot systems. Instrumentation adds cost to any project but if it is needed we can monitor a huge array of data points to give any customer enough information to either optimize their existing process or justify scaling up.
