Electric Heat Tracing Design

A utility company approached EPIC with a need to prevent pipe freeze-ups for over 3500+ feet of piping.

CLIENT: A Fortune 500 company

INDUSTRY: Utilities

KEY ENGINEERING FEATURES:

    • Self-regulating electric heat tracing system
    • 3500+ feet of piping

CORE CHALLENGES:

    • Large, complex piping system
    • Tight budget
    • Low maintenance piping system
    • Pipes located in an outdoor environment with extreme conditions and could not freeze in cold weather

AN EPIC SOLUTION

Front-end Engineering

EPIC completed our proprietary Front-End Engineering (FEE) approach from the concept stage of the project to assure the most efficient
process and accurate cost quotation. EPIC’s engineers created an implementation plan that included the following elements:

    • Self-regulating electric heat tracing system
    • Heat trace system and insulation installation before pipe bridge shipment
    • Multiple circuits to keep total voltage low

EPIC’s Proven Solution

EPIC assembled over 3500+ feet of piping and pipe bridges in-house. A self- regulating electric heat tracing system was selected due to low maintenance requirements and pipe freezing prevention features.

The self-regulating heat trace system was installed during pipe rack assembly, along with the required insulation. Multiple circuits were designed and installed to keep total amps low across the wires.

The entire pipe rack was shipped pre-assembled and insulated with the clips on so that it could be easily installed in the field. This allowed for faster assembly and on-site installation, reducing cost and allowing the client to improve safety records.

IMPACT:

    • Reduced costs from competitor project methods through modular construction of pipe racks
    • Ensured longevity of the line by using heat trace design best practices
    • Decreased on-site construction time by installing and insulating heat trace system offsite before piping installation

THE EPIC DIFFERENCE

EPIC provided expert insight during the design and installation process. Due to EPIC’s experience in the field, EPIC was able to recommend the correct applications and prevent problems before they arose.

The EPIC Difference includes several key features that assure a projects success:

    • Front-End Engineering to ensure that the proper steps are taken during project scope development
    • Plant engineering experience that assists clients to identify needs, pinpoint objectives and provide the most appropriate manufacturing equipment for the application
    • Open door client policy to promote innovation. We invite clients to visit EPIC to experiment with new processes, technologies and techniques that push the limits of traditional engineering.
    • Accountability to responsibly manage our clients’ projects from start-to-finish and beyond.
    • A transfer of knowledge (not just a basic training) for the systems and equipment we provide
    • Single point of direct contact during the entirety of the project
    • State-of-the-art shop which decreases down-time and increases the speed of project completion
