Boy Scouts & Engineering Firm Inspire St. Louis Area Kids with STEM Workshop

manufacturing-engineerThe Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America recently teamed up with local engineering firm EPIC Systems, Inc. for a mini-engineering event. The workshop was held at EPIC’s fabrication and manufacturing engineering facility in South Saint Louis, with over 60 participants.

During the event, students completed several hands-on activities, including: designing their own race cars, building and sinking tin-foil boats, and melting Styrofoam with acetone. Engineers from EPIC lead the workshops, teaching concepts including 2D and 3D design practices, engineering disciplines and career opportunities, and engineering for manufacturing systems.

The SLU aviation team and Washington University Formula Car teams were also on-hand at the event to show off their projects and answer questions. Participating Webelos earned an engineering badge over the course of the morning. One student said that the coolest thing he learned at the event was “engineers are awesome!” You see that and other cute moments in a video of the event available on EPIC’s mini-engineering page

The Boy Scouts of Greater St. Louis work throughout the year to bring STEM learning opportunities to students in the local community. A list of upcoming events and opportunities can be found at:

EPIC has a STEM education initiative, holding several workshops and publishing video tutorials of engineering activities for kids. The company is a manufacturing engineering and fabrication firm that provides proven solutions to plants throughout the United States. Students who participate in these events are able to see process systems at EPIC.

A United Way agency, the Greater St. Louis Area Council provides youth with character development programs and values-based leadership training. The council, which includes St. Louis city, 26 counties in eastern Missouri and 10 counties in southern Illinois, had more than 47,000 youth and nearly 12,000 adult volunteers participate in Scouting programs last year making it one of the largest Scout councils in the country.
