ST. LOUIS, MO – EPIC Systems, Inc. recently delivered a custom-designed pilot plant that has successfully demonstrated a new CO2 capture technology for Akermin, Inc. EPIC teamed with Akermin to design, build and install the pilot plant to meet Akermin’s requirements for performance and budget. Akermin reported this week that the pilot plant, which contains their proprietary Biocatalyst Delivery System, is capturing close to 90% CO2 from flue gas in ongoing testing that began in early May.
EPIC designed the pilot unit as a modular skid, creating a self-contained pilot system. Modular skid design provided a major advantage to the Client. Onsite construction was not practical, as it would have greatly increased the overall cost and extended the project schedule.
Using a modular design, the entire system was built in EPIC’s fabrication shop. The off-site construction included initial commissioning and testing. This allowed for better quality control and reduced the overall timeline. The “plug-and-play” system was delivered fully-operational with minimal time on-site for installation and commissioning.
The pilot skid was efficiently engineered to use compression tubing for cost and time savings. EPIC evaluated each process stream in the system and individually decided whether to use compression tubing and fittings or traditional welding methods. Where the process systems operational parameters did not require piping, tubing was used for time and cost savings.
The final unit contained two distillation columns, a re-boiler, instrumentation and testing ports. The skid system was designed to have a small footprint, and instruments were carefully placed to prevent interference.
“This is a great example of the client supplying the process technology and EPIC Systems delivering the right system. Our team designed and fabricated the most capital-efficient, fastest time-to-market implementation of the technology. EPIC and Akermin are very pleased with the results,” said John Schott, President of EPIC Systems.
